' Customer is always right! '
Customers is actually a main role in part of business world. Why i say so? because business cannot be administered without client. Same as here, the designer will not achieve profit if their design do not follow customers will and they will probably have no intention for buying it. There exist many products but only the customer can choose what they need or no need based on theirs comfort and suit. Customer is a king and they are always right. Therefore, we can ever bargain or force them to accept the design and buy it directly. Hence, the picture on above show customers ask and need something from the company but they received something different from what the customers expect if his needs are not clearly state. This is a time consuming process but it is better than delivering a completely different thing.
What is affordance? Affordance is 'the perceived (perception) and actual properties (characteristics) of the thing, primarily those fundamental properties that determine just how thing could possibly by used.'
- an affordance exists relative to the action capabilities of a particular actor and its existence is depending on actor's ability to perceive it.
- refers to the perceived properties of that subject that suggested how we the user could use it.
- element of perceived: Context-where, Culture-society, Instince-unconscious and Mental model-expectation.
Users know what to do even without a picture, instruction, label or ect.
(how?-based from someone teach us or experience or try and error)
- Buttons affords pressing
- Doors affords pushing
- Handle affords grasping
- Knob affords turning
Look-in - Can't quit certain application until something is done to it.
Look-out - Can't open certain application until certain action is taken before opening it.
Inter-lock - The combination of both Look-in and Look-out.
Thinking Question
Dog Robot-applying affordance??
Affordance is applied on robots based to our daily basis. It designed and made to give benefit in our life and be user friendly for our life be more easier. How does a dog robot know what to do with a ball? This involving with both affordance which are the dog robot and the ball. Certainly, every robot has it's own 'brain'and a dog robot is designed to recognize the structure and the properties of the ball. The system that contain the elements of affordance in the dog robot and pair with the design give it to perform an action. For the ball, the affordance is designed for it look like a ball. However, if a ball is not designed well, the dog robot might not recognize it and possibly it will treat a ball as something else.
Therefore, affordance is very important and it must be persuasive in all design for enabling to function very well as what customers expected.
